6 Signs Your House Needs New Siding

The siding on your home adds character, charm, and curb appeal to the building. However, it also serves the functional purpose of protecting its structural integrity from rain, humidity, high and low temperatures, persistent moisture, and insects.

Therefore, you must maintain your siding and, when necessary, replace it to prevent damage to your home’s walls and interior.

If you haven’t been taking care of your home siding, here are six tell-tale signs that it’s time to install new ones:

Lack of maintenance

If you have stopped maintaining your exterior siding, it’s only a matter of time before your negligence takes a toll on their condition. Each type of siding is susceptible to risks, but with regular maintenance, you will save yourself additional work and money in the long run.

You must perform routine maintenance checks on your siding or upgrade to low-maintenance vinyl siding, which doesn’t need to be refinished every few years and can be easily cleaned with a hose. An added benefit of vinyl siding is that it dramatically transforms your home’s appearance.

Holes and cracks

Holes and cracks are unsightly, but they also jeopardize the structural integrity of your property. Gaps in exterior siding can retain moisture which is the biggest enemy of wood. Besides, cracks can also let water into your home, damaging insulation and increasing skyrocketing air conditioning bills.

Mold and mildew

Although mold and fungus aren’t always a sign of siding replacement, you must take action to clean and restore them. Use pressure-washing to remove mold and fungus, as they can damage your home’s exterior siding and interior walls

Rising energy costs

Siding plays a key role in protecting your home’s insulation and keeping the energy bill at the minimum. If your energy bills are steadily rising, or your HVAC takes longer than usual to cool your home, your home’s siding, roof, or attic could be the culprit. You must periodically inspect the roofing, exterior walls, siding, and attic and replace them with the help of a professional if needed.

Seam Separation

If the seams between the siding boards seem to be pulling apart, then the siding may need to be replaced. You can see this seam separation with improperly installed siding or siding that has aged. In either case, rain and moisture can seep underneath the siding panels and cause damage to materials on the inside of the wall.

Bubbled siding

Bubbled siding is a sign that it has trapped water. It’s an alarming sign because repelling water is one of the key responsibilities of siding. Water build-up can cause costlier issues like rotting wood. You must replace the siding when you see signs of water entrapment.
