A repair usually makes sense when the roof is under about 15 years old, the damage has one cause, the rest of the roof shows no widespread granule loss or curling, and the decking is sound.
Replacement is usually better value when the roof is past 20 years, you're seeing granule loss across multiple slopes, there are leaks in several unrelated places, or you've already paid for repairs more than once.
