7 Signs Your Shingle Roof Needs Repair or Replacement

Consider this: you’re spending a happy weekend with your family, watching movies over dinner, when drops of water fall on your table. You look up, and another drop falls on the food. It’s no longer a comfortable and fun night.

Though roof issues can arise anytime, it’s the worst when they come unannounced. A day ago, you didn’t have a care in the world about roof damages, and suddenly you are considering costly repairs.

Here, we give you a low-down on the seven signs you need to watch out for not to let roof damage surprise you.

Curled, cracked, or missing shingles

Asphalt shingles are supposed to be flat and flexible, but they curl, crack, and get brittle as they age. If one or two shingles are changing shape, it’s not essential to repair them right away. However, if more shingles are missing or curling, it’s a warning sign requiring immediate attention.

Missing granules

There are granules on top of shingles that are embedded in the asphalt layer. They provide added security to shingles. However, as shingles deteriorate, granules loosen and fall into the gutter, creating congestion. When a substantial amount of granules get collected in the channel, you need to call for an inspection.

Your roof is older than 20 years.

Even a well-maintained roof will last for 15 to 20 years. Some can last longer, but shingles come undone by this time. Therefore, it’s better to replace your roof before it falls and damages your property.

Leakage

The most apparent sign of roof damage is leaking water, which usually happens after a rainstorm. Puddles aren’t the only sign of water damage; you can spot leakage through wall cavities, stains, or water moving through the ceiling. Single-leak repair is inexpensive, but a significant, persistent leak signals roof damage. It would help if you got it repaired before the water affects your air vents and plumbing.

Sagging

Your roof’s ridge should be in a straight line; it’s a warning sign if it sags. A sagging ridge is not a sign of a problem with coating or siding. It shows a depleting roof structure or a rotting roof deck.

Light coming through the roof

If even a small amount of light is filtering through the roof, it is because your vent or chimney’s flashing has come undone or certain shingles are missing. Whatever may be the reason you need to call a roofer for repairs.

Wear and tear

All kinds of roofs experience wear and tear with time. When damages are not promptly addressed, they can pose a safety hazard for your family and the property, resulting in expensive repairs and replacement.
