What to Do in Case of Storm Roof Damage?

Storms can cause severe damage to your house and property. Most of the time, your roof takes a hit. Once the storm is over, you need to ensure your roof is in good condition. Assessing the damage and knowing what steps to take to fix your roof can help ensure it will be ready for the next storm season.

Here’s what you need to do when your roof gets storm-damaged. 

Step 1: Access the damage 

The first step towards fixing your roof after a storm hits is identifying how much damage has occurred. There are some apparent signs, while others need a keener observation. Here’s what you need to look for:

• Broken or loose shingles: One of the most common signs of storm damage to your roof is loose shingles. Some can even be broken if the storm or hailstones are severe. If you notice them, it’s important to get it repaired as soon as possible.
• Missing flashing: Another sign of storm damage is missing flashing along the sides, skylights, and chimneys. It is vital to fix this before another storm approaches.
• Water damage: If you notice water damage such as leaks, water accumulation, and wetness on the attic or basement walls, your roof has water damage.

Don’t be afraid to ask any questions!  Always ask for estimates and the tentative time frame for the company to complete the repairs.

Step 5: Make alternate living arrangements

If the damage is extensive, you may need to find a safer place to live while the repairs are being done. Ask your contractor if it is necessary to vacate the house for repairs. If so, make arrangements with your relatives or even stay at a hotel for a few days. You can move back once you are given the green light from the contractor.
